Where you found evidence matters
A noise in the ceiling, chewed pantry packet or droppings behind an appliance can have several explanations. House mice often live inside buildings; roof rats may use elevated areas. These are useful possibilities, not a diagnosis from one sign. Victoria's Department of Health advises looking for gnawing, smears, holes and droppings during an inspection.
Record the room and approximate time of each observation. Photograph evidence from a normal, safe position. Keep children and pets away from droppings and damaged food. Do not pull apart cupboards or enter a roof just to identify the species.
Why rat and mice control plans may differ
The likely species changes where the technician checks for food, shelter and entry points. Small gaps matter for mice; larger openings and roof access may matter for rats. The treatment and monitoring plan should reflect the property, not simply the words “rodent problem”.
Ask whether the visit includes inspection, treatment, monitoring and advice on repairs. Remove accessible food scraps, store food securely and report plumbing leaks, but do not seal a suspected active opening without a plan.
