Do not choose treatment from the sound alone
Scratching or thumping in a Melbourne roof can prompt a search for rat control or possum removal. Victorian wildlife guidance notes that rats may make lighter scampering and gnawing sounds, while possums can make heavier thumping and vocal sounds. These are clues, not reliable identification on their own.
Keep a log of when the noise starts, where it seems loudest and whether you have seen an animal enter or leave from a safe location. Avoid entering the roof, reaching through a damaged eave or sealing a hole while an animal may be inside. A photo of a visible exterior access point can help the assessment.
