Identify the cause before choosing a treatment
Carpet beetle larvae can damage wool and other animal-derived materials. Look for larvae or shed skins around affected items and in undisturbed areas. Adult beetles near a window alone do not show where damage is occurring. Clothes moths can also damage fabrics, so identification matters.
What to check at home
- Inspect affected clothing, carpet edges and areas beneath furniture that you can move safely.
- Vacuum accessible edges and sheltered areas, then dispose of collected debris appropriately.
- Follow the item's care label when cleaning affected textiles before storage.
- Keep cleaned, vulnerable items in suitable sealed storage.
Finding and addressing the source is important. Do not spray clothing or bedding as a general shortcut. Any pesticide use must follow the product label and suit the specific site.
When to ask for professional help
Arrange an assessment if you continue finding larvae, cannot locate the affected material or are unsure whether the problem is beetles or moths. Avoid throwing away carpets simply because you have seen an adult beetle: ask for identification and an assessment first.
